The Christmas holidays are over and all the decorations have been put away for another year. I’ve really enjoyed our kids over this holiday. We’ve walked, visited people, done a few more jobs in the house, and played hundreds of board games; but now it is time for me to let school have them back for 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday.
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with our education system in Britain. I think our teachers do an amazing job and constantly strive to achieve the best that they can. But I think that the system is set up to fail both our teachers and our kids. I hate the fact that so much emphasis is put on academic achievement, I hate the fact my four year old comes home with homework every week. I hate the fact that individuality and creativity go largely unrecognised. Children are more than just an end product, defined by their SATs results; I just wish this was celebrated a bit more.
